چکیده

This paper introduces a biologically realistic mathematical, computational model of theta (≈5 Hz) rhythm generation in the hippocampal CA1 region and some of its possible further applications in drug discovery and in robotic/computational models of navigation. The model shown here uses the conductance based description of nerve cells: populations of basket cells, alveus/lacunosum-moleculare interneurons and pyramidal cells are used to model the hippocampal CA1 and a fast spiking GABAergic interneuron population for modelling the septal influence. Results of the model show that the septo-hippocampal feed-back loop is capable of robust theta rhythm generation due to proper timing of pyramidal cells and synchronization within the basket cell network via recurrent connections.

Human hippocampal theta oscillations: Distinctive features and interspecies commonalities

14 The hippocampus, along with its characteristic theta oscillation, has been widely implicated in various 15 aspects of animal memory and behavior. Given the important roles that hippocampal theta oscillations have 16 in theoretical models of brain function, it might be considered surprising that these signals have not been 17 reported as often in humans as in animals. In this chapter we revie...

Pharmacological and computational analysis of alpha-subunit preferential GABA(A) positive allosteric modulators on the rat septo-hippocampal activity.

Clinically most active anxiolytic drugs are positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of GABA(A) receptors, represented by benzodiazepine compounds. Due to their non-selective profile, however, they potently modulate several sup-type specific GABA(A) receptors, contributing to their broad-range side effects. Based on observations in genetically altered mice, however, it has been proposed that anxio...

Anxiolytic profile of pregabalin on elicited hippocampal theta oscillation.

Previous published work with the novel anticonvulsant, analgesic and anti-anxiety medication, pregabalin (Lyrica), has shown that it has anxiolytic-like actions in several animal behavioral models. However, pregabalin is structurally and pharmacologically different from other classes of known anxiolytic drugs, and the mechanisms that alter brain activity to produce anxiolytic-like actions are n...

Minimizing Amplitude of Oscillation of a Suspended Object during Transport by a Robot

– One of the important applications of robots is in material handling and transport of various shaped objects. In cases where an object cannot be directly grasped by the robot gripper, and must be carried by a hook, it may be subject to undesirable swings during transport. This paper presents an analytical method for minimizing the oscillation of a suspended object during transport. This method...

Hippocampal theta oscillations are slower in humans than in rodents: implications for models of spatial navigation and memory.

The theta oscillation is a neuroscience enigma. When a rat runs through an environment, large-amplitude theta oscillations (4-10 Hz) reliably appear in the hippocampus's electrical activity. The consistency of this pattern led to theta playing a central role in theories on the neural basis of mammalian spatial navigation and memory. However, in fact, hippocampal oscillations at 4-10 Hz are rare...
